In this chapter, CARE Research has analyzed the basic cost structure of the organised retail industry in India. Following points are covered in the chapter:

  • Costs like raw material, employee, rental and selling & distribution constitute for approximately 85-90% of the total operating costs as percentage of sale of the retailers in India.
  • The rental expense as % of net sales for Indian retailers stands higher compared to the global retailers.
  • Higher overhead expenses like procurement of raw material have led to decline in EBITDA margins of retailers. Moreover the net margins of the retailers have been dented due to increasing interest burden.
