Indian coal Industry is divided into more mature coal and less mature lignite sources and dominated by public companies CIL, SCCL. In last three years, the coal production of public coal companies has stagnated to ~435MT. The most significant usage are in electricity generation, steel production, cement manufacturing and as a liquid fuel. In 2011, the world had consumed around 6.1 bn tonnes of coal and around 1.0 bn tonnes of Lignite (brown coal). The biggest market for coal is Asia, which currently accounts for over 65% of global coal consumption; although China consumes a significant proportion of it. Coal demand is driven primarily by 1) Power and Captive Power Plant (CPP) segment 2) Steel 3) Sponge iron and 4) Cement sector. Power sector is the major consumer of coal, which contributes ~60% of the total demand.
